Piano History

The piano has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the early 18th century. The instrument was invented by Italian harpsichord maker Bartolomeo Cristofori in the early 1700s (source: Encyclopaedia Britannica). Unlike the harpsichord, which produced sound by plucking strings, the piano produced sound by striking the strings with hammers. This allowed for a greater range of dynamic expression and made the piano a popular instrument for composers and performers alike. During the 19th century, the piano became a staple in households around the world, and manufacturers such as Steinway & Sons and Bechstein rose to prominence.

Piano music also became a popular form of entertainment, with composers such as Franz Liszt and Frederic Chopin pushing the boundaries of the instrument's capabilities with their virtuosic compositions. In the 20th century, the piano continued to evolve, with innovations such as the electric piano and synthesizer expanding the instrument's sound possibilities! Today, the piano remains a popular and versatile instrument, used in a wide range of musical genres from classical to pop to jazz.

Piano lessons draw on this rich history and help students develop their skills and passion for the instrument. Join as a beginner and continue the legacy of piano playing for generations to come.
